Notes for THOMAS ROWE:

It would appear that Thomas was born during the greatest snow storm ever

recorded in New England history. According to Cotton Mather, the noted

colonial historian:

The greatest storm of the season began on February 18th and continued till

the 23rd, beginning again on the 24th so violently that all com-munication

between neighbors ceased. The storm left the snow from ten to fifteen feet

deep on the level, and in places ... twenty feet. The oldest Indians had

never heard of a storm that was its equal. On the day the second storm began,

Sunday, the 24th, no religious meetings were held throughout New England.

The winter was disasterous to animal life. Cattle, sheep, swine and poultry

were buried in the snow and starved to death. Wild animals from the forest

were desperate with hunger. Bears and wolves killed some ninety percent of

all the deer, causing such a scarcity of deer that the General Court later

passed laws protecting those that survived. Apple trees were damaged by the

weight of the snow. The crust of snow was so strong that cattle could walk on

it. Some houses were completely buried in the snow. Paths were shoveled

beneath the snow between house and barn. Snow shoes were needed throughout

the winter. Mail service between the towns was delayed for weeks after the

storm was over. And in the midst of this phenomenon, our stalwart ancestor

was born!
