Notes for Sir EVERARD de ROWE:
Kinship: 19th Great-Grandfather

Beautiful Devonshire in the southwest of England Is the ancestral home of the Rowes. Here at Lamerton near Plymouth the family were long possessed of a considerable estate which was handed down from generation to generation, evidently since the days or Richard the First. It was in the days of the crusades that the founder of the house received as a token of his bravery in the holy wars the arms since borne by his descendants.

The name of Nicholas Rowe, a member of this family, is well known to all students of English literature as that of the first biographer of Shakespeare and translator of Lucan's Pharsalia, he was born in Little Barford, Bedfordshire, England,June 30,1674, and was educated at Westminster school, studied law, became a successful courtier and politician. His edition or Shakespeare prefaced by the famous biography was published in 1700 and was followed by various successful dramatic works. In 1714 he was made poet

laureate by George the First to succeed Nahum Tate, but died two years later and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Previous to his appointment as laureate in the reign of Queen Anne he served as under secretary of state to the Duke of Queensbury.

Nearly a quarter of a century before the birth of Nicholas, however, another member of the family, lured by the promise of the New World and the freedom of worship according to conscience, Left the country of his ancestors and settled on the bleak shores of New England, John Rowe came to Cape Ann in 1651 and established himself on the estate still well known to his descendants, being the first to settle in that part of Gloucester known as the Farms. Here in the wilderness with no neighbors within a radius of two miles even the stout heart of the pioneer near failed him, and such was the loneliness that he is reported as saying that were it not for his wife he would burn his house and run away by the light of it, He remained, however, and became the father of a numerous family whose names will long be remembered in the annals of "Old Cape Ann." His great grandson, the third John Rowe, was an ensign at the assault of Crown Point and served as a lieutenant throughout the French wars, When the country rushed to arms at the sound of the shots at Lexington and Concord, he was placed in command of one of the Gloucester companies and led it at Bunker Hill. Under him at this time served three other Rowes, his sons and nephews, One of these, his son John, served in Washington's army all through the Revolutionary War, and commanded one of the state companies in Shay's Insurrection, When Hull started on his disastrous expedition in the War of 1812 he was offered a high commission in his army, but refused, foreseeing and prophesying, it is said, the unfortunate outcome of the enterprise.

Beulah Sanford Osborn France, contributor to "Five Hundred First Families of America," says the Roe family is very ancient and actually takes its name from Rollo. Hrolf the Granger, or Walker) the Viking who conquered Normandy, married a daughter of Charles, King of France and in 911 became the first Duke of Normandy. The "lls" were dropped from Rollo under the softening influence of the French language and "at the time of William the Conqueror, the name became Roo and Roe." Rollo was descended from Scandinavian rulers.

Sir EVERARD de ROWE of Roking near Romney in Kent. He was Knighted by King Richard I for bravery During the Third Crusade. At the battle of Acre his sword hand was severed and he continued to fight with his other hand. He died after 1216.

Kinship: 8th Great-Grandfather

JOHN ROWE was born in 1607 at Tavistock, England. He came to America between 1620 and 1640 and landed in the Salem, Mass. area. He was married in 1640 to BRIDGET JEGGLES daughter of WILLIAM and MARY JEGGLES of Salem who lived near where the Hotel Hawthorne is now (1995). Bridget was born 10 June 1616 at England. He came to Gloucester, Mass. before 1651 and was the first settler at the Farms (Joppa). He bought land there in 1651 of Thomas Drake into whose possession it passed from Nicholas Norton of Weymouth, who bought it of William Vinson, to whom it was sold by George Norton, the original grantee. The Registry of Deeds in Salem, Mass. Vol. 1, No. 81, p. 201, lists a deed of land bought by

"John Roe of Gloster" from Wm. Vinson of "Gloster, pottmaker" who in consideration of 16 pounds sell unto John Roe, of the said Gloster, my farme lying in Gloster, which I bought of George Norton, and given by the towne to the sd Norton namely forty acres of upland and twelve acres of salt marsh altogether-lying neere little good harbor......."Vinson signed it with his mark the 28th day of the 10th month 1651.

" 7 mo; 1653, Gloster presentment, We present John Roe of Gloster for afrontting Mr. Wn Perkins in the time of his preaching of the word in public." There was no disposition of the case. It would appear that Perkins was not adored by all in the community as other persons were similarly charged.

He was the first settler on this remote and lonely spot. a dense forest surrounded him, separting him on one side from the ocean, which was not far distant, and on the other from his townsmen, most of whom were more than two miles off. He did not, however, find repose in this retired place, and seems far from satisfied with his farm. On the 26 June 1656, he was presented in court for " saying if his wife was off his mind he would set his house on fire and run away by ye light and ye devil should take ye farme and speaking the same a second time added he would live no longer among such a company of hellhounds". For thus relieving his mind he was find twenty shillings and ordered to make a confession at the next town meeting in Gloucester. He continued there, nevertheless, till death relieved him from a earthly trouble. He died 9 March 1662. His widow Bridget married William Coleman on 14 Nov. 1662. She died 2 May 1680 or 1690.

The following is John Rowe's will and inventory of his estate in the original spelling.

" In the name of god Amen: I John Row in my will and Testament; being in my perfect sences doe giue and Resine my soule to god that gaue it: and my Body to the earth to be Buried; and my goods: I despose of; As followeth: I giue all my wholle estat which god hath bestowed upon me; to my wife and my to sonns; That is to say to my wife; and my sonne John; and my Sonn huah; to be equally deuided Betweene them and to euery one a like: and as for my wife: if her third part of goods will not maintaine her; it is my will my too sonns shall maintaine her all her dais; if in case shee liue unmaried; And if

She died 7 March 1674 at Gloucester, Mass., leaving three daughters, who married three sons of Anthony Day. He married 2nd. on 10 Sept. 1674, Mary Prince daughter of Thomas and Margaret Prince of Gloucester, Mass. She was born 19 July 1638 and died 3 March 1723. Both her and their daughter Abigail were imprisoned for witchcraft. She married 2nd. Isaac Elwell. He enlisted in the Indian War of 1675, and received a grant of land at Kettle Cove for his services.

In 1692 Phebe (Wild) Day, wife of Timothy Day was accused of witchcraft and was taken to Ipswich gaol where she remained until September 24, of the same year, when she was released on bonds for her reappearance, together with Mary Rowe and Widow Rachel Vinson. These three Gloucester witches were accused of bewitching the sister of Lieut. Stephens, and the story is also related that when the three women were crossing Ipswich bridge on their way to the gaol, an old woman who met them was immediately thrown into convulsions. The fact that she was taken to Ipswich instead of to Salem, where the trials were being held, may have saved her life, for there were so
many victims in Salem that all others were forgotten. She died April 8, 1723, aged seventy. [Topsfield Historical Collections Volume 11 page 23]

Notes for Nicholas Rowe:

Nicholas Rowe, poet laureate of Middle Temple. He was babtized 30 Jan. 1664 and died 6 Dec. 1718. He was buried in Westminster Abbey. His Will was proved at Canterbury by A. Pope and Thomas Hill.

Nicholas Rowe poet laureate, dramatist.

(Dict. of Natl. Biog. Vol XLIX)

Born in the house of his mother's father at Little Barford, Bedfordshire, in 1674, son of John 1647-1692 and Elizabeth, daughter of Jasper Edward. "his father's family was long settled at Lamerton, Devonshire. His father was a London barrister of the Middle Temple and a sergeant-at-law, who published in 1689 Benloe's and Dalison's Reports in the Reign of James II."

Nicholas' "Ambitious Stepmother", a tragedy, was produced at Lincoln Fields. Congreve described it "a very good one." "Tamerlane" became a stock piece and played annually at Drury Lane Theatre on 5 Nov. anniversary of William III's landing and of the Gunpowder Plot until 1815. Sir Walter Scott though little of "Fair Penitent" but Dr. Johson "gave it unstinted praise: "There is scarcely any work of any poet at once so interesting by the fable and so delightful in the language." The play-going public approved. "Ulysses" (1706)had a successful run at Queen's Theatre, Haymarket. "Royal Convert", based on early British history, was produced in Haymarket. "Jane Shore" was

rapped by Pope. It ran for 19 nights at Drury Lane "and long held the stage." "Lady Jane Grey" at the Drury Lane (1715) was his last tragedy. A comedy "The Biter" lasted one night with the author "laughing with great vehememce" at his own wit.

"One of Rowe's chief achievements was an edition of Shakespear's works which he published in 1709 (6 vols.). This is reckoned the first attempt to edit Shakespeare in the modern sense. In the prefatory life Rowe embodied a series of traditions which he had commissioned the actor Betteron to collect for him on a visit to Stratford-on-Avon; many of them were in danger of perishing without a record. Rowe displayed much sagacity in the choice and treatment of his biographic materials, and the memoir is consequently of permanent value. He prefixed dramatis personae to each play, divided and numbered acts and scenes on rational principles and marked the entrances and exits of the characters. Spelling, punctuation and grammar he corrected and modernized.

(Gentlemen's Mag. & Historical Chronicle Vol. LXXXIV Part 1)

p. 360 "Literary Quarrels from Personal Motives" Rowe and Addison. D'Israeli: Johnson says in Life of Rowe on Addison's Observations on Rowe's character, "Rowe had expressed his happiness to Pope, of Addison's promotion; and Pope, who wished to conciliate Addison towards Rowe, mentioned it, adding, that he believed Rowe was sincere. Addison replied that he did not suspect Rowe feigned; but the levity of his heart is such, that he is struck with any new adventure: and it would effect him just in the same manner, as if he heard I was going to be hanged.

Vol. LXXXIII p. 295 List of Poets Laureat. 10. Nahum Tate. Having sheltered himself from his creditors in the Mint, where he died 1716, he was succeeded by 11. Nicholas Rowe. Dr. Johnson in his Life of Rowe seems to insinuate that Tate was ejected from the post to make room for Rowe. Rowe died 1718 at aged 45. He married 1st.
