for VALENTINE
( WALTER) SARTORIUS:
Kinship: 4th Great-Grandfather
Valentine and Elizabeth Sartorius arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on December 8, 1783 aboard the transport ship Prince of Orange, which set sail from Plymouth, England. Originally, they sailed from New York on the Thomas, but were driven off the coast of Nova Scotia and ended up in England. Valentine, a private, and his brother Ludovic, a drummer, were members of the 3rd Battallion of the 60th regiment of the Royal Americans, which was comprised primarily of German citizens. Ludovic leaves no record for us to trace.
Valentine and Elizabeth Sartorius lived in Sydney County, Guysborough Township, Nova Scotia on lands granted by King George III of England as payment in part for services rendered during the Revolution. At the time Valentine and Elizabeth received their land, other members of the 60th regiment of the Royal Americans received similar grants. Land grants were given based on number of family members. The last record of Ludovic is found when he too received property under this grant.
Valentine Sartorius died in 1791 and Elizabeth re-married to Peter Wendell. Elizabeth Sartorius married Christian Dort August 25, 1806. Abigail Satorius married Christian Ehler July 16, 1811. Ludovic Satorius, son of Valentine and Elizabeth, also leaves no record for us to trace. Jacob Sartorius married Elizabeth Feltmate July 18, 1809.
Jacob
and Elizabeth Sartorius, in the 1817 Census of
Nova Scotia lived in Sydney County. Jacob Sartorius is listed as Head
of Family
with a wife, two boys and one girl. Further research in Guysborough's
Sketches
and Essays proves that this is true.

*James was not born at the time of the 1817 Census.
No record has been found for Mary Elizabeth or James Crawford Sartoris. Jacob, in the 1861 census for Guysborough County, was listed as head of family with a wife, 2 single females and 5 single males.
John Valentine Sartoris migrated to Pugwash between 1820 and 1835. The 1827 Census for Cumberland County, where Pugwash is situated, was destroyed. Also, the church records for that period were destroyed.
John Valentine Sartoris, in Census Records, has listed his origin as German. This coupled with the fact that Jacob and Elizabeth Sartorius had a son named John tells us that this is the same person. It is not clear when John Sartoris marries Eleanor Shields.

Alexander was also baptized on June 17, 1849.
Standing up for them at the wedding were Samuel Hingley, Margaret's father, Daniel Hingley her brother, both farmers, John Sartoris and Eleanor Sartoris.
Alexander was born in Nova Scotia in 1846, and Margaret was born in 1853. Alexander worked in the shipyard in Maitland, Nova Scotia although his parents lived in Pugwash. He was a cabinetmaker type of carpenter and specialized in finishing and cabinetry in the Captain's Cabins of the ships. Because this was the last work to be done on a ship, he frequently had to go along on "trial" voyages and on at least two occasions the ships sank under him. All hands were saved in both shipwrecks although on one occasion the entire crew plus the Captain's wife (the only woman on board) were adrift for 11 days.
Margaret Jane worked as a cook in the boarding house where Alexander lived and thus they met. They were married in Truro, near Maitland, and moved to Taunton, Massachusetts, USA, in or about 1886. Of the 9 children born to Alexander and Margaret Jane, 5 were born in Maitland and the remaining 4 were born in Taunton. The children born to Alexander and Margaret Jane were Clarence Edward, Arthur Sherwood, Robert Gordon, John Robert, Morton Gerish, Annie Maud, Francis Curtis, Carlton Roy, and Alexander (Alexander died at birth in Taunton, Massachusetts.)
With Alexander and Margaret Jane over the next several years were Alexander's sister Mary and her husband, Benjamin Cobb. It is said that of an evening Alexander and Benjamin would retire to a workshed behind the house and with a pail of beer, work on projects. A few of these projects were an old grandfather clock, a desk, a credenza, and others.. Alexander was known as one of the best cabinet makers in Taunton and worked in the Taunton State Hospital since coming to the United States. Alexander and Margaret Jane's home was at 10 Hodges Ave., Taunton, Massachusetts.
